| This year we wanted to do something different for the top of our entrance columns, but lacking time we didn't want to build gargoyles from scratch, so we decided to use a couple of Barts from ACC and add wings to them. They won't be true gargoyles but should look good. We were looking for wing designs and came across this prop on the dcpropshop site, so we decided to use this style. | |
| We decided to frame the wings with steel and weld everything together, so we grabbed some 1/8" steel rod and a few coat hangers. The 1/8" are going to be used for the outside of the wing and the coat hanger for the wing dividers. We cut the rod to about 31" long and the coat hangers to 28", 26" and 24" the cut off piece of round stock we are going to use for a corner brace. | |
| Here is the outside of the wing, the joint is the area of the wing at eye level in the picture above. The frame bends away and up from the body (the piece that is vertical) and and then the curved top of the wing. Essentially you don't want the bends going in the same direction. | |
| Once the main support is welded the inside bones are added, we spaced the inside to about 6" between them. We tried to get them as secure as possible in the corner. If you use coat hangers, be sure to sand off the coating on them, it makes it much easier to weld. | |
| Here you can see we are welding on the corner brace for the wing. | |
| Here the wing is all welded together. | |
| Two wings all done, two more to make. | |
| The wings with latex and cotton added to the outside bones. This will not be final position of the wings, they are too straight up, we want them bent out a bit more. | |
| We will be building up the outside of the wing with more cotton and Latex as well as the inner wing bones. Then we will add the cheese cloth to finish the wings. | |
